Getting started with Children’s Safe Harbor is a simple and supportive process. Whether you’ve been referred by the court, another agency, or are seeking services on your own (for Safe Exchanges), we’re here to walk you through each step. Below is everything you need to know about eligibility, required documents, and how to begin using our services.

Eligibility for Services

  • Court Orders: Approximately 98% of families receiving services at Children’s Safe Harbor have a court order requiring Supervised Visitation or Safe Exchange
  • Self-Referrals (Safe Exchange Only): For Safe Exchange Services, families may also refer themselves if both parents agree to use Children's Safe Harbor. If one parent does not agree, a court order is required
  • Agency Referrals: Families may also be referred by other agencies for services

Enrollment Process: Step-by-Step

  1. Initial Contact:
After receiving a court order or referral, each parent must call Children’s Safe Harbor directly at 815-316-7772 to begin the intake process.
Note: Children's Safe Harbor cannot schedule appointments until both parents have contacted the agency.
  2. Scheduling Intakes:
Once both parents have called, separate intake appointments will be scheduled for each.
  3. Documentation Required:
If services are court-ordered, parents must bring a copy of the court order to their intake appointment.
  4. Intake & Orientation:
During the intake appointment, Children’s Safe Harbor staff will:
    • Explain the agency’s policies and procedures
    • Allow parents to share safety concerns, background information, and their goals for using services
  5. Child Orientation Visit:
If services are deemed appropriate, Children’s Safe Harbor will schedule a time for the children to visit the center before services officially begin. This visit helps them:
    • Get familiar with the environment
    • Understand the process
    • Ask questions in a supportive setting
